Grove Mill Lane was designated in 1973, St Mary's in 1975, five more areas in 2001, High Street and King Street in 2006 and Oxhey in 2013. On a house in any of them, replacing a flue on the front or side that faces a road needs planning permission, even if the old one went in before the area was designated.

Affinity Water's lookup puts WD19 4EA in its Northwood zone, 348 mg/l in the 2025 report, rather than either Watford zone. Affinity does not publish where its zone lines run. Its lookup gives a reading for your own postcode, and that is the figure to choose scale protection against.

WD17: town centre, Cassiobury and Nascot Wood
WD17Cassiobury, which runs on into WD18, is mostly 1930s Mock Tudor houses. Cassiobury Park Avenue and Cassiobury Drive both appear in the council's Article 4 records, so on those roads we check the address on the council's finder before settling a flue position.
WD18: West Watford and Holywell
WD18A WD18 postcode reads 353 mg/l in Affinity's Watford South zone, the harder of the two Watford zones, so scale protection is worth including with a new combi here.
WD19: Oxhey, South Oxhey and Carpenders Park
WD19Oxhey is in Watford borough, but South Oxhey, a post war London County Council estate, and Carpenders Park are in Three Rivers District, so Three Rivers, not Watford, is the council for a flue there.
WD24: North Watford
WD24Affinity's lookup puts WD24 7DS in its Watford South zone at 353 mg/l, not in Watford North, so the zone's name is no guide to the hardness at an address.
WD25: Garston and Leavesden
WD25Garston covers the Stanborough, Woodside and Meriden wards, with the A41 taken as its border with North Watford. Aldenham and Letchmore Heath share the postcode but sit outside Watford borough, so the borough figures on this page do not describe them.
