In the 2021 Census 48,054 of 58,993 district households had mains gas as their only central heating, against 73.8% across England and Wales. A gas boiler is the norm here.
4,240 metres of mains being replaced
Cadent is replacing metallic gas mains along Sandridge Road, Upper Culver Road, Seymour Road, Marshall Avenue and Battlefield Road among others, from 22 June to 22 December 2026, and says over 85% of homes in that part of St Albans use gas central heating.

What 338 mg/l does to a boiler
Affinity Water supplies St Albans. Its 2025 reports for the two zones named after the city, St Albans South and St Albans North, give the same total hardness, 338 mg/l, with calcium at 135 mg/l, from a single sample in each. Affinity's own published scale calls anything over 300 mg/l very hard.
Treat 338 as the scale of the thing and not as a constant. Affinity's wholesale guidance says hardness across its supply area generally runs from 300 to 350 mg/l and adds that the published figures are average levels that do fluctuate. The zones either side of the city sit near the two ends of that range: Redbourn reads 348 and Harpenden 320. Affinity publishes no map of where its zones begin and end, so which one an address falls in is something its postcode checker answers and we cannot, but since both St Albans zones read 338 the figure holds for the city either way.
Scale settles wherever water is heated: on the hot side of a combi's heat exchanger, and around a cylinder's element. A heat exchanger that is furring up loses efficiency long before it fails outright, which is the case for catching it at the annual service and not at the breakdown.

What a service and a repair involve
A service means a Gas Safe registered engineer checking the boiler's combustion, seals and safety devices and the flue, which is how a carbon monoxide risk gets spotted before it matters. Most manufacturers require an annual service to keep the warranty valid, so a missed one can cost the cover.
A repair starts with finding the fault, not guessing at it. A pressure drop is often a leaking valve or an expansion vessel that has lost its charge, and neither needs a new boiler.
